VoteBot vendors circle wagons

The major suppliers of e-voting technology haveformed a trade group. Other trade groups we all love include the RIAA, MPAA, and BSA. I sure hope this works out better.
The newly constituted Election Technology Council pledged to establish a code of ethics for its members, a series of recommendations for standards and certification, and a review of best practices for security.
Call me crazy, but shouldn't these issues be a matter of legal requirement? Rather than letting a cabal of private interests set these standards, why isn't their product and conduct stricly regulated by the federal government?
