I have oodles of respect for Microsoft, but I can't stand to see big companies trot out variations of the old whinge "we can't compete against free."
Bullshit.
Amazingly successful companies compete against free all the time. Kids would rather spend their allowance at Taco Bell than eat at home. People drink bottled water rather than tap water (even when, in the case of Coca Cola's Dasani, it's just bottled tap water). You want to compete with free? Then make your option obviously better; people will pay for better.
"The key thing is [with] people who are selling their software, the software has to somehow be better than the free software and [if] it's not better, I'm puzzled as to what the business model is because they can%u2019t sell it," [Microsoft's] Gray said.Dude, I'm puzzled as to what the business model is for inferior software too.
